Why a community website?

In the developers meeting of July 5th 2007 the attendants agreed that the best way to increase the community action around Dokeos would be to set up a community website.

It was felt that on the current Dokeos website a lack of guidance exists for people that want to be part of this community to either help in coding or just to share their experiences and ideas.

This will also help us to make a clear distinction between the Dokeos community and the Dokeos company so it's clear to new users that Dokeos is an open source software with a developer/user community and that the Dokeos company sells services around this software.

Goal

The goal of the community website is to complement the Dokeos.com website, it will not replace it.

Its goal is to increase the activity of the community around Dokeos. Giving the community a space to express their ideas, share their improvements to Dokeos and to be a place where users and developers with questions about Dokeos can find answers.

More formally, the goals of the Web site are:

  • Promoting the sharing of information and ideas regarding the development and use of Dokeos
  • Promoting the cooperation regarding the the development and use of Dokeos
  • Enabling the development of Dokeos to efficiently go in the direction wanted by the community members
  • Promoting the use of Dokeos in schools, companies and other institutions

Roadmap

  • Registering of domain name (ok)
  • Setting up Drupal site (ok)
  • Analysis (audience, concept & implementation)
  • Visual design (we don't really have someone who's going to do this yet)
  • Implementing the analysis and design in Drupal
  • Finding people for the different tasks that come with the maintenance of a community web site
  • The launch of the community website is planned for users' day in Geneva

Contents

The idea is to start with the basics that are needed for a community portal, growth will influence the content.

Ideas for sections:

  • the (current) forum
  • a blogging system (
    • both for users to share experiences as well as developers who can describe the progress of modules
    • the news we see currently on the dokeos.com website is mostly commercial news announcing a big new client. To make the community more visible, the community website can also contain news-items from users talking about their experiences (from SoftwareX to Dokeos, good practices in Dokeos,...)
  • a documentation part (current wiki)
  • the extensions/modules
  • translations
  • ...

It should also have a crosslink with the dokeos.com website (moodle-like?)

More ideas for the community website:

  • introduction of dokeos
  • features
  • in practice, dokeos demonstration courses
  • news, events
  • FAQ
  • documentation
  • handbooks
  • downloads
  • modules, plugins and themes
  • wanna help? (code, documentation, translate, donate, ..)
  • coding guide
  • roadmap
  • bugtracker
  • list of developers/teams/workgroups active in the community
  • community wordwide (who? where?)
  • donations
  • wiki
  • forum
  • about us
  • contact
  • search
  • links
  • dokeos partners
  • dokeos company

And some stuff for the future? ;-)

  • shop
  • podcast/vodcast

Tasks

  • Practical, who does what
  • Hosting? (Vrije Universiteit Brussel will do this for a couple of months, after official launch of the community we try to get funding for an external hosting)
  • Software to be used?
    • Drupal is a candidate (Is used)
  • Test setup?
  • Who will administrate/moderate? ThijsBraem begins by setting up the site. Afterwards these tasks will be divided over several persons (possible roles: site administrator, story contributor, moderator,...)
  • URL? www.dokeos.org is already taken. We chose dokeosplanet.org . It has in the meantime been registered and paid for by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
