EU Funding projects

  • Presentation by Wim de Bruyn
  • General contractor for these projects should be companies, educational institutes could supply know-how, programming, etc. Swiss universities & companies can be accepted as supplier, not as contractor
  • “Dokeos is not only an electronic tool”
  • “Eureka” allows many projects a year
  • LCMS could add more communication/integration elements, which could make it more attractive for companies
  • In the project submission: “Dokeos” would not be central
  • Funding for development in Flanders could be available through IWT2 (25 to 40%), other local agencies exist in other countries.
  • “Fitting Dokeos in companies” could be a good focus, it could improve Dokeos for everyone. And could also get EU funding for LLL. SCORM, Oogie,... are features more used in companies then within universities. Learning objects from universities also don't get to the companies yet
  • “Associations” (ex. Agoria in Belgium) are a third kind of party, besides companies and educational institutes, that can be involved in projects.
  • Main clients for HoGent hostings are adult education institutes (which could come in handy for finding partners).
  • Erasmus and Grundtvig are probably already full (a lot of competition). Leonardo projects are a lot less popular: so there's more chance to get a project there. For Da Vinci, universities can no longer be the main contractor.
  • We could look for a subject (eg. “pedagogy for blind people”), find partners and connect it to some companies. Wim knows some organisations that could be interested.
  • Tempus projects: Tempus is collaboration between West- and East European projects.. Developers in Eastern Countries are cheaper so this could make the funding more efficient. This could help opening up the community towards Eastern Europe, including the market (good for the company). Moodle is doing the same in China.
  • We should submit more then one project, to be able to learn from these projects, different programmes, different networks,...
  • We will start an “International Project Steering Committee” to think about real projects. Wim is willing to share his knowledge about projects etc. We will also need specialists in the areas we want to do research about.
  • In Geneva there's a good group of pedagogists (including some from Louvain-la-Neuve) who already did some EU projects.
  • Some funding is also available for the 'first contacts' for these projects (plane tickets etc.). Companies can do this as well.
  • Some Dokeos-type companies already exist in some countries that we can contact for these things. Ex. In Spain there's already some know-how about these projects.
  • In Denmark we have a contact that used to work for the European Union who can review our proposals. In Germany a Dokeos users group exist. There's more bigger organisations in the Netherlands that also work with companies. These companies seem to be interested in Open Source programs. We also have contacts in Italy.
  • We can add a forum/wiki page/mailing list for this. Mailing list maybe on dokeosplanet.org . Stefaan will start the technical setup.
  • We will get some more contacts from Thomas

Dokeos Community website

  • Proposition of audience models
  • “Teachers” is too narrow as an audience, should be “end users”' A professor does more then teaching alone. People want to be able to do everything in the Dokeos platform, the web site could help them find people who did similar things
  • Dokeos is also a communication and collaboration tool, this is something that should also be visible on the web site.
  • An overview of user groups should become available on the website.

DokeosDays 2008 in Geneva

  • The first day will be focused on workshops, people can learn more about the technological background of dokeos (install, administer,...) and pedagogical workshops (not everyone will already be there then)
  • Second day: presentation of community, web site,... (this is the day most of the people will be there)
  • Maybe e-learning day third day (that's another conference)

Dokeos 2.0

  • A lot has been done by Hans (Changelog available on wiki)
  • Roles & Permissions (still needs work, but we're getting there)
  • iCal support for 1.8 exists, Hans added it to 2.0
  • Breadcrumbs have become more visible and standardized
  • New homepage for the platform: each application can have a number of content blocks to display on the main page. Uses JQuery now.
  • Possibility for CSS-only drop down menus (maybe replacing the tabs?)
  • Ajax: for instance to move blocks around on the main page. Already done for main page (with JQuery11). Also in search.
  • Migration tool: Sven and David are working on this, and will be for the following 3 weeks. Code is available on the SVN.
  • Forum and Wiki for Dokeos 2.0.
  • Tracking system: Sven and David are also working on this. We should somehow make sure things are tracked that have pedagogical value. In Geneva people are doing usability studies about this.

Other projects

  • Integration PHPFusion with Dokeos (Ben Verschelden)
  • Ludwig Theunis presented Dokeos Campus plugin (dokeos.tussen.be)

Varia

  • Idea: Trac.edgewall.org, bugtracker, link with sourceforge, ...
  • HoGent has new iconset for dokeos
  • Dokeos Certificates (Experts) => Postponed to next meeting

Next meeting
