What's new?

  • More complete translations - thanks to the new translation tool, it's now possible to make translations via a web browser. Because the process is easier - but still labour intensive - many translations are more up to date than ever.
  • Language switch - When you enter the Dokeos portal, you can choose your language.
  • Community building - inside Dokeos, you'll find the who is online page - a list of users who are logged in into the system. You can click to see their pictures and public profile items.
  • Learning path - you could already import SCORM packages, now you can also export them. Layout has been redesigned to be lighter and flexible. You can remove the table of contents, add prerequisites based on score in tests. Forum integrates inside the frameset. All Dokeos activities can be added as steps in the path.
  • Improved agenda - the agenda has been completely overhauled with many new options, for example the My Agenda now gives you the option to add personal agenda items.
  • Document management - the documents tool has received several updates, but some are not in the beta yet. What you will find already are some UI changes, the ability to download a zipped archive of a folder, sort the document list, add metadata, and you can now set quota for each individual course. You can also import flash, video and audio through our modified HtmlArea tool and the image import has been facilitated (no need to type the URL of the image).
  • Improved security - there's no more need for the PHP register globals setting to be on. As said above, the beta version still has several tools that need some fixing to take this into account.
  • Improved administration section - all functions are easier to access, and you can now configure many options through the web interface instead of by digging through the code.
  • Improved course management - all course folders are stored inside a courses folder for better organisation. We have completely rewritten the course import and export functions.
  • Plugins and modularity - there's a new system to add plugins to Dokeos more easily, you can expect several plugins to arrive the coming months, ranging from a simple clock to advanced search tools and the book tool, the first Dokeos plugin converted from a Moodle module. You can add info about your plugin on this wiki, and you can upload it on out extensions website.
  • API libraries - our function libraries have been expanded and improved, making it easier for new programmers to access databases, display information in a uniform way, and much more. We plan to go much further with this, we also want to achieve more database independence so people could use other database software (like PostgreSQL or SQLite) instead of MySQL.
  • Interoperability - support for SCORM import and export, XML import and export for some features (users and hyperlinks), IEEE LOM Metadata support in documents and groups, import of Hotpotatoes, connection with QuestionMark (this last one is not in the CVS yet).
  • Campus home page online editing - instead of writing in many different files and databases, you can now edit the homepage of the campus : main content, news, course categories, right menu (including creating the pages it links to),footer.
  • And much, much more. Those interested can read the complete Dokeos 1.6 roadmap.

Dokeos 1.6 stable

Ideally, everything should work perfect now. Unfortunately, there exists no software that is perfect - bugs do slip by, and we also have deadlines to meet. You are encouraged to report bugs into the Dokeos 1.6 bugs subforum.

Dokeos 1.6 release candidates

All tools should be in a very good and usable state now. By default, the server type is now set to production. There still are many bugs, but no critical ones. This release should be close to the actual stable release, which should be soon, unless testers discover really bad bugs. Please keep posting them in the Bugs Dokeos 1.6 beta section of this forum. Note: the learning path still has many bugs, we're working on it.

From this moment on, there will not be any database changes, new translation strings, or new features. Only bugfixing. If all goes well, the next release will be Dokeos 1.6 stable; in case of problems we might release another release candidate.

Between the beta versions and the release candidate, there have been some minor database changes. All users are encouraged to re-install completely. There will be no more database changes between the release candidate and the stable version.

Dokeos 1.6 beta releases

IMPORTANT The Dokeos 1.6 beta releases are unstable releases, designed to let the community experiment with new features and give us feedback and bug reports. They should not be used on production servers. It is possible to upgrade from Dokeos 1.5, 1.5.4 and 1.5.5 to Dokeos 1.6 beta or Dokeos 1.6 beta, but there are still several bugs in this feature has not been tested enough yet, do not use it and expect everything to work perfectly.

The learning path tool is also notoriously buggy, we're working on it but probably won't be able to get all bugs before the stable release. We will release a new bugfix version for this soon.

Please report bugs in the Bugs Dokeos 1.6 beta part of the Dokeos forum, this way you help us fix the bugs and release a stable 1.6.
