Introduction

Dokeos is a multilangual platform that is translated in 34 languages. Maybe not all these languages are relevant to you and the users of your platform or you want to change the language of the platform (you chose this when you did the installation). All this can be done through the languages page of the Platform Administration. To reach this page you have to login as platform admin, go to platform administration (link is in the header or in the right menu of the my courses page), and select Languages.

What can you do on this page?

Platform Administration: Languages

On this page you see all the languages of Dokeos. On this page you can:

  • make a language available for the students and teachers (through the profile or the course settings)
  • change the default language of the platform (new users to the platform will get this language as the default language in their profile

make a language (un)available

The eye icon indicates the current state of the language. If the icon is grey then the language cannot be used by users of the platform. If the icon has a blue iris then the language is available and the user or course admin can select this language in their profile or course settings. You can change the availability of a language by clicking the eye icon.

next to the eye icon you can also see the edit icon. When you click this icon you can make this language the default platform language if you check the checkbox. You can also change the name of the language (maybe you want all the language in the dropdown list to appear with their English name instead of their local name: Spanish instead of Español). Whenever a new user registered to the campus this platform language will be used as default (which the user can then change afterwards if this is allowed by the platform admin)

Where are these languages used?

My Profile

My profile: Languages
My profile: Languages
If the platform admin allows us to change their language of choice (see: Dokeos Config Settings), then the user can do this in my profile. Only the visible languages will appear in this dropdown list

All the interface outside a course is then translated in the language the user choice. This does not count for the texts that get displayed by the System Announcements (see: System Announcements) because this is not an element of the interface but it is content.

Course Settings

The course administrator can also change the language of his course to any language that is allowed by the platform admin (=any language that is visible). This language overrules the selection of the user.

When a user has for instance instance as his preferred language and the course admin of the course Français pour débutants (French for starters) has indicated that the interface of his course is French, then all the users will see a French interface in this course.
