Discussion: Blackboard

Blackboard is userfriendly for students.

Being a student myself, I never really enjoyed using Blackboard.

  • The user interface is disastrous:
  • There is a number of ways to go to a course, instead of one coherent method of navigation.
  • It seems teachers can choose a different menu style for their course, so the user interface looks different between courses.
  • The whole thing is butt ugly.
  • Frames!!!
  • Functionality could've been better as well:
  • You can enroll yourself in a course (provided there is no password needed), but you can't leave a course. So in the third grade, I'm still shown the announcements from the courses I followed in the first and second grades.
  • Counterintuitively, new announcements aren't displayed at the top of the page. I'm not even sure they are outlayed in a logical order at all.
  • The tabsheets "View today", "View last 7 days", ... don't work as expected. Choosing any of the tabs today (March 2005) will still show me announcements from e.g. December 2004.
  • I'm not sure if teachers are able to sort course documents. Folders and files are displayed in a seemingly random order. There's not even a basic grouping for folders versus files. Unless, but that's hard to believe, not a single teacher would bother using such a feature.
I found out the documents are completely sortable. Must've been the teachers after all... --turboke 10:00, 29 Apr 2005 (CEST)
  • Logging in is such a hassle that I'm mentioning it seperately:
  • You have to go to the main page (http://blackboard.myschool.tld/) and click the login button every time. Using a bookmark that points to http://blackboard.myschool.tld/webapps/login brings up the login form, but your first attempt will always fail. So it's either clicking from the main page, or going directly to the login page but having to try twice.
  • Being unaware of technical aspects of such a system, LDAP, ... I expect the login and password provided to me by college to work on all their websites. For some reason, the login was the same as for e-mail, webspace, ... but the password was "welkom" for everyone. Guess what happens if you log in to someone else's account and changes his password before he does?
There is LDAP support in Blackboard, this problem was only related to my college. --turboke 10:00, 29 Apr 2005 (CEST)

Above remarks apply to Blackboard Learning System - Basic Edition(Release 6) - 6.2.3.19 as used at my college. I don't know which apply in general and which don't. --turboke 09:32, 24 Mar 2005 (CET)
